Driving test will last about 45-55 minutes minimum of 1 manouver and 10 minutes of independent driving following direction signs or set diagrams 3-4 junctions at a time.
I recommend to take instructor along on your test as an observer, the examiner will ask you if you want your instructor present when you sign the form at test center and this will help your learning needs should you get any faults we can discuss and correct after test. Many x-learners have said to me certain examimers and test centers are very strict and racist with asians and they failed for petty things before coming to myself. With your instructor sitting in test as observer these situations will not happen and I can assure you has never happened with any of my learners and as you can see from my record and experience from 2004 I have found all test centers and examiners to be fair and most are quiet friendly and will help you calm your test nerves. Some examiners will make short conversations while you drive if you feel comfortable talking so it doesnt have to be pin drop silence in the car, you are allowed to take water bottle if you feel thirsty and park up anytime somewhere safe and convenient if you have any problems for few seconds or to calm nerves. Examiners understand this is one of the most important days of your life.
I also advice to do a few mock tests near the test center before the real day
How to book your practical driving test
There are three ways to book the practical driving test. You can book your test online at the DSA website, by telephone and by post. It is possible to book the test on behalf of other people and sometimes your driving instructor/school can offer this service with an associated admin fee.
To book the practical element of your driving test you will need to have a valid UK driving license number and a theory test pass certificate number. To confirm your booking you will need to pay by credit or debit card.
You should also be aware of the following details:
• Personal details
• Your instructor’s ADI number (not essential)
• Preferred date
• When else the person taking the test is available – especially booking a test at short notice
• If the person has any special circumstances / disability
To cancel the test you need to give the DSA at least 3 days notice, not including the days you made the booking or are due to sit the test.

This is very good to watch if you want to take your driving to
a higher standard than DSA. Just few things you cannot copy on the learner test
eg: straight lining roundabouts and using right lane when no overtake is on.
I recommend that you do a low tone or silent mode commentary on test especially any unusual
situations although its not compulsary it allows examiner to know what your
thinking or about to do.
How do I find video clips for commentary driving?
Click on you tube
type 'advance driving commentary' and watch IAM part 1, 2and 3, Chris Gilbert (former driving instructor of prince william)
advance commentary and Rospa clips are very good if you want to be a safe driver for life.
people who pass advance driving have 70% less chance of a crash

At roundabouts plan to stop but look to go as soon as it is safe. Dont rush into traffic que's try to time your approach so vehicles waiting in que have left before you reach so you wont need to stop or collide into the back of someone (common form of accident on roundabouts).
Imagine an imaginary car behind all the time waiting for your signal.
Imagine the car infront will do an emergency stop any time so keep your minimum 2 second distance in dry and 4seconds in wet conditions and 10 times in icy.
Avoid driving along side large vehicles on roundabouts keep a diagonal position. Large vehicles need more space and have big blindspots and can swerve or topple over. Some lorries and cycles will use left side for going right especially with foriegn number plate.
Keep an escape route in traffic jams and multi lane roads. The vehicle infront may roll back or break down anytime. Or maybe emergency vehicle may need to pass by eg ambulance. There should be room about 2-5meters infront to change lanes. Larger the vehicle bigger the distance so you can see whats going on around it. Tyre and tarmac rule only applies with cars with bonnets if you drive van or lorry you will have problems with this rule. Ever wonder why van and lorry drivers get so close behind because that is the way they been taught.
Keep escape routes in multilane roads when driving eg dual carriageways and take a diagonal position with traffic rather than parallel along the side of you. Its not a race. What if the car changes lanes suddenly or you need to swerve to avoid something infront you will never hit anyone next to you apart from the air. Or maybe a vehicle may pull out or edge out too much from a side road and you will only swerve into empty space rathers than an innocent driver next to you not expecting you to swerve.
Help vehicles on slip roads by changing lanes while approaching and then moving back in after e.g. motorways, dual carriageways, tunnels and over and underpasses
Use limit point skills on Bends to judge appropriate speeds. (see advance driving videos)
Remember Breaks are to slow down and Gears are to go, don't change gears unneccessarily until you are ready to accelerate out of a hazard.
When steering i reccommend Pull and Push method. Pull the wheel down with left hand from a 11 o clock postion for left turn and right hand at 1 o clock pulling to right for right turn and then push up with other hand if needed from 6 o clock position. Both hadns acts like a mirror with 1 griping and the other sliding. (takes practice so dont worry)
On bends favour left side for right bends and center of your lane for left hand bends or near the right of lane if safe to do so.
Drive at speed limits if the road and weather conditions are safe to do so and don't force people to overtake unnecessarily or to overtake from the inside lane.
